Information is everywhere

These days, information appliances can be found in all sorts of places, including not only smart phones and PCs but also household appliances, automobiles, aircraft, trains, and even buildings. In fact, it is reckoned that information appliances account for more than half the cost of a modern airliner. Information appliances also play an important role in robots and other such conglomerations of hardware.

This is easy to understand if you consider that a human being is a kind of system. Humans don’t just perform simple physical functions, but also perform higher cognitive functions like detecting information, communicating, making decisions, and controlling the world around them. We also use our information processing capabilities to converse with, cooperate with and enjoy the company of other people. It is easy to imagine how the loss of these capabilities could seriously impact on our lives.

In the same way, the loss of information processing capabilities from the world around us can also cause serious problems such as non-functional traffic signals, uncontrollable engines, or even aircraft that are unable to take off or land. So if you look at it this way, it’s easy to recognize the importance of information processing.

Information engineering: harnessing the power of information

Information drives all sorts of things around us. Information engineering is the study of how information can be put to use in engineering, and draws together aspects of computer science, media engineering and communication engineering from an “information” viewpoint. At the Department of Information and Computer Science, our aim is to contribute to society by developing techniques for the creation, acquisition, transmission, storage, processing and display of information, and by cultivating engineers who are skilled in the use of these techniques.

Aims of the Department of Information and Computer Science

In the 20th century, we first saw the development of technologies that are centrally managed but used by large numbers of people, such as electric power and railways. These were followed by technologies such as the motor car that delivered greater personal freedom, and then (in the latter half of the century) by technologies that allowed individuals to handle information at any time and in any place. In the 21st century, information is used not only by people but also by machines, ranging from robots to all manner of everyday objects.

At the Department of Information and Computer Science, our mission is to cultivate the world’s leading experts in the field, with a proper understanding of the communication technology used to exchange information organically and efficiently and the future trends of this technology, and with a thorough grounding in computer technology and visual and audio processing to make information useful to humans.

History of the Department of Information and Computer Science

With the reorganization of the Department of Science and Engineering in the 1996 academic year, the Department of Information and Computer Science was created with the aim of cultivating experts to support the future IT industry by gaining comprehensive knowledge of information, communications and computers, and we began offering professional education courses to second-year students in 1997. The first batch of students graduated in March 1999, but 80% of them went on to graduate school, so most of the students educated at the Department of Information and Computer Science didn’t leave until 2001.

The IT industry has developed at a speed that could not have been predicted at the start of the 1996 academic year, but almost all of the IT equipment that now surrounds us in our daily lives is assembled from three elements: media technology (audio, video, etc.), communication technology (networks, radio, etc.) and the computers that control them. One could say that a deficiency in any of these elements would make it impossible to design these devices. In this regard, our department was founded in the hope that most of our graduates will gain a well-balanced and thorough mastery of these three elements, and keep up with developments in modern IT society and remain active at the center of the IT industry.
